Then tell them that I, the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, have sent for my servant, Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. I will bring him here and make him set up his throne and his royal tent over these stones that I told you to bury.

Meanwhile, Benhadad and the other kings had been drinking in their tents. But when Ahab's reply came, he ordered his soldiers to prepare to attack Samaria, and they all got ready.

At midday, King Ahab and his Israelite army marched out of Samaria, with the young soldiers in front. King Benhadad of Syria and the thirty-two kings with him were drunk when the scouts he had sent out ran up to his tent, shouting, “We just now saw soldiers marching out of Samaria!”

Darkness was your robe; thunderclouds filled the sky, hiding you from sight.

In times of trouble, you will protect me. You will hide me in your tent and keep me safe on top of a mighty rock.

You are their shelter from harmful plots, and you are their protection from vicious gossip.

I am also the one who says, “Cyrus will lead my people and obey my orders. Jerusalem and the temple will be rebuilt.”

The LORD said to Cyrus, his chosen one: I have taken hold of your right hand to help you capture nations and remove kings from power. City gates will open for you; not one will stay closed.

Just watch while I send for the kings of the north. They will attack and capture Jerusalem and other towns, then set up their thrones at the gates of Jerusalem.

Jeremiah, carry some large stones to the entrance of the government building in Tahpanhes. Bury the stones underneath the brick pavement and be sure the Jews are watching.

When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia was on his way to attack Egypt, the LORD sent me with a warning for every Egyptian town, but especially for Migdol, Memphis, and Tahpanhes. He said I must tell them: Prepare to defend yourselves! Everywhere in your nation, people are dying in war.

Your king and his officials will die, and I will rule in their place. I, the LORD, have spoken.

A third of you will die here in Jerusalem from disease or starvation. Another third will be killed in war. And I will scatter the last third of you in every direction, then track you down and kill you.

You control human events— you give rulers their power and take it away, and you are the source of wisdom and knowledge.

This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city.
