They will weep and pray as I bring them home. I will lead them to streams of water. They will walk on a level road and not stumble. I am a father to Israel, my favourite children.

Then, in front of everyone, David sang praises to the LORD: I praise you for ever, LORD! You are the God our ancestor Jacob worshipped.

Straight away he brought you to a town.

You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water,

“I have chosen David as my firstborn son, and he will be the ruler of all kings on earth.

Then tell him that I have said, “Israel is my firstborn son,

I will lead the blind on roads they have never known; I will guide them on paths they have never travelled. Their road is dark and rough, but I will give light to keep them from stumbling. This is my solemn promise.

Every wild animal honours me, even jackals and owls. I provide water in deserts— streams in thirsty lands for my chosen people.

I am the LORD, the Creator, the holy God of Israel. Do you dare question me about my own nation or about what I have done?

The LORD says, “Clear the road! Get it ready for my people.”

He led his people across like horses running wild without stumbling.

Our ancestors Abraham and Jacob have both rejected us. But you are still our Father; you have been our protector since ancient times.

You, LORD, are our Father. We are nothing but clay, but you are the potter who moulded us.

I have always wanted to treat you as my children and give you the best land, the most beautiful on earth. I wanted you to call me “Father” and not turn from me.

You call me your father or your long-lost friend;

People of Israel, you are my own dear children. Don't I love you best of all? Though I often make threats, I want you to be near me, so I will have mercy on you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

The LORD said: People of Israel and Judah, when these things happen you will weep, and together you will return to your land and worship me, the LORD your God.

At Bethel, Jacob wrestled with an angel and won; then with tears in his eyes, he asked for a blessing, and God spoke to us there.

But later, Israel will turn back to the LORD their God and to David their king. At that time they will come to the LORD with fear and trembling, and he will be good to them.

I, the LORD, will make the descendants of David and the people of Jerusalem feel deep sorrow and pray when they see the one they pierced with a spear. They will mourn and weep for him, as parents weep over the death of their only child or their firstborn.

Don't you know that we all have God as our Father? Didn't the one God create each of us? Then why do you cheat each other by breaking the agreement God made with your ancestors?

Ephraim and the tribes that march with it must set up camp on the west side of the sacred tent, under their own banner. The 40,500 troops of the tribe of Ephraim will be arranged by divisions and led by Elishama son of Ammihud.

John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about, when he said, “In the desert someone is shouting, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.’ ”

God blesses those people who grieve. They will find comfort!

You should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, help us to honour your name.

God will bless you hungry people. You will have plenty to eat! God will bless you people who are crying. You will laugh!

In certain ways we are weak, but the Spirit is here to help us. For example, when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit prays for us in ways that cannot be put into words.

and be your Father. You will be my sons and my daughters, as surely as I am God, the All-Powerful.”

People of Israel, you are the LORD's children, so when you mourn for the dead, you must not cut yourselves or shave your forehead.

Israel, the LORD is your Father, the one who created you, but you repaid him by being foolish.

and walk a straight path. Then lame people will be healed, instead of getting worse.

Here you will find all God's dearest children, whose names are written in heaven. And you will find God himself, who judges everyone. Here also are the spirits of those good people who have been made perfect.

God had the power to save Jesus from death. And while Jesus was on earth, he begged God with loud crying and tears to save him. He truly worshipped God, and God listened to his prayers.

The Lamb in the centre of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to streams of life-giving water, and God will wipe all tears from their eyes.”
