But if your enemies try to rob or destroy you, I will rob and destroy them, and they will be led as captives to foreign lands.

I pray that all who hate the city of Zion will be made ashamed and forced to turn and run.

If you faithfully obey him, I will be a fierce enemy of your enemies.

The LORD is their defender, and what you do to them, he will do to you.

Other nations will lead them home, and Israel will make slaves of them in the land that belongs to the Lord. Israel will rule over those who once governed and ill-treated them.

You defeated my people. Now you're in for trouble! You've never been destroyed, but you will be destroyed; you've never been betrayed, but you will be betrayed. When you have finished destroying and betraying, you will be destroyed and betrayed in return.

I will never send anyone to attack your city, and you will make prisoners of those who do attack.

Weapons made to attack you won't be successful; words spoken against you won't hurt at all. My servants, Jerusalem is yours! I, the LORD, promise to bless you with victory.

Our enemies refuse to admit that you are God or to worship you. They have wiped out our people and left our nation lying in ruins. So get angry and sweep them away!

The LORD said: I gave this land to my people Israel, but enemies around it have attacked and robbed it. So I will uproot them from their own countries just as I will uproot Judah from its land.

You belonged to me alone, like the first part of the harvest, and I severely punished those who ill-treated you.

When that time is up, I will punish the king of Babylonia and his people for everything they have done wrong, and I will turn that country into a wasteland for ever.

The Babylonian army destroyed my temple, but soon I will take revenge. Then refugees from Babylon will tell about it in Zion.

Our enemies have reached the town of Dan in the north, and the snorting of their horses makes us tremble with fear. The enemy will destroy Jerusalem and our entire nation. No one will survive.”

Everyone heard my groaning, but no one offered comfort. My enemies know of the trouble that you have brought on me, and it makes them glad. Hurry and punish them, as you have promised.

Don't let their evil deeds escape your sight. Punish them as much as you have punished me because of my sins. I never stop groaning— I've lost all hope!

Then everyone in Egypt will know that I am the LORD. You and your nation refused to help the people of Israel and were nothing more than a broken stick.

People of Edom, not only have you been Israel's longtime enemy, you simply watched when disaster wiped out its people as punishment for their sins.

I'll hand over your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, who live far away. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Zion, because of your sins you are surrounded by many nations who say, “We can hardly wait to see you disgraced.”

You, my enemies, said, “The LORD God is helpless.” Now each of you will be disgraced and put to shame. I will see you trampled like mud in the street.

But like a roaring flood, the LORD chases his enemies into dark places and destroys them.

Now you will be disgraced instead of praised. The LORD will make you drunk, and when others see you naked, you will lose their respect.

The LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, said: I've heard Moab and Ammon insult my people and threaten their nation. And so, I swear by my very life that Moab and Ammon will end up like Sodom and Gomorrah— covered with thorn bushes and salt pits for ever. Then my people who survive will take their land.

So the angel told me to announce: I, the LORD All-Powerful, am very protective of Jerusalem.

For a while I was angry with the nations, but now I am furious, because they have made things worse for Jerusalem and are not the least bit concerned.

I have decided that Jerusalem will become a bowl of wine that makes the neighbouring nations drunk. And when Jerusalem is attacked, Judah will also be attacked.

But first, he will bring many nations to attack Jerusalem—homes will be robbed, women raped, and half of the population dragged off, though the others will be allowed to remain.

Then Judah will be his part of the holy land, and Jerusalem will again be his chosen city.

Then the glorious LORD All-Powerful ordered me to say to the nations that had raided and robbed Zion: Zion is as precious to the LORD as are his eyes. Whatever you do to Zion, you do to him.

Then the LORD your God will remove the curses from you and put them on those enemies who hate and attack you.

If you are doomed to be captured, you will be captured. If you are doomed to be killed by a sword, you will be killed by a sword. This means that God's people must learn to endure and be faithful!

When the Israelite army returned from chasing the Philistines, they took what they wanted from the enemy camp.
