What more could I have done for my vineyard? I hoped for sweet grapes, but bitter grapes were all that grew.

I am the LORD All-Powerful! Israel is the vineyard, and Judah is the garden I tended with care. I had hoped for honesty and for justice, but dishonesty and cries for mercy were all I found.

Israel, when I, the LORD, found you long ago it was like finding grapes in a barren desert or tender young figs. Then you worshipped Baal-Peor, that disgusting idol, and you became as disgusting as the idol you loved.

I feel so empty inside— like someone starving for grapes or figs, after the vines and trees have all been picked clean.

Your fortresses are fig trees with ripe figs. Merely shake the trees, and fruit will fall into every open mouth.

And the first part of the crops from their fields and vineyards also belongs to you. The people will offer this to me, then anyone in your family who is clean may have some of it.

You are like salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.
