King Jehoiakim, you are doomed! You built a palace with large rooms upstairs. You put in big windows and used cedar panelling and red paint. But you were unfair and forced the builders to work without pay.

Then Neco appointed Jehoahaz's brother Eliakim king of Judah and changed his name to Jehoiakim. He led Jehoahaz away to Egypt as his prisoner.

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he was appointed king, and he ruled eleven years from Jerusalem. Jehoiakim disobeyed the LORD his God by doing evil.

Nor have I cheated my workers and caused them pain.

You are in for trouble! You take over house after house and field after field, until there is no room left for anyone else in all the land.

You cheated others, but everything you gained will fly away, like birds hatched from stolen eggs. Then you will discover what fools you are.

Jehoiakim, no one will cry at your funeral. They won't turn to each other and ask, “Why did our great king have to die?”

Do not steal anything or cheat anyone, and don't fail to pay your workers at the end of each day.

You make cruelty and murder a way of life in Jerusalem.

You're doomed! You built a city on crime and violence.

The LORD All-Powerful said: I'm now on my way to judge you. And I will quickly condemn all who practise witchcraft or cheat in marriage or tell lies in court or rob workers of their pay or ill-treat widows and orphans or steal the property of foreigners or refuse to respect me.

And don't just tell them they are free to leave—

You refused to pay the people who worked in your fields, and now their unpaid wages are shouting out against you. The Lord All-Powerful has heard the cries of the workers who harvested your crops.
