Jeremiah 2:31

Now listen to what I say! Did I abandon you in the desert or surround you with darkness? You are my people, yet you have told me, “We'll do what we want, and we refuse to worship you!”

Israel, you grew fat and rebelled against God, your Creator; you rejected the Mighty Rock, your only place of safety.

Are you already satisfied? Are you now rich? Have you become kings while we are still nobodies? I wish you were kings. Then we could have a share in your kingdom.

I am the LORD, and it makes sense to respect my power to punish. So listen to my message for the city of Jerusalem:

I am Amos. And I raised sheep near the town of Tekoa when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel. Two years before the earthquake, the LORD gave me several messages about Israel,

I fed you till you were satisfied, then you became proud and forgot about me.

The LORD did not speak in a dark secret place or command Jacob's descendants to search for him in vain. The LORD speaks the truth, and this is what he says

If I have too much to eat, I might forget about you; if I don't have enough, I might steal and disgrace your name.

They say to themselves, “We are great speakers. No one else has a chance.”

The wicked are too proud to turn to you or even think about you.

The high priest at the time was Azariah, a descendant of Zadok, and he replied, “Ever since the people have been bringing us their offerings, we have had more than enough food and supplies. The LORD has certainly blessed his people. Look at how much is left over!”

I am bringing them into the land that I promised their ancestors. It is a land rich with milk and honey, and the Israelites will have more than enough food to eat. But they will get fat and turn their backs on me and start worshipping other gods. The Israelites will reject me and break the agreement that I made with them.

Long ago you left me and broke all ties between us, refusing to be my servant. Now you worship other gods by having sex on hilltops or in the shade of large trees.

Your shoes are worn out, and your throat is parched from running here and there to worship foreign gods. “Stop!” I shouted, but you replied, “No! I love those gods too much.”

You turned away from God, your Creator; you forgot the Mighty Rock, the source of your life.

“Why?” asked the king. “Do you want something I haven't given you?” “No, I just want to go home.”

Those who are evil say to God All-Powerful, “Leave us alone! Don't bother us with your teachings.

I'll go and talk to the leaders. They know what God demands.” But even they had decided not to obey the LORD.

The people have rebelled and rejected the LORD too many times. So enemies will attack like lions from the forest or wolves from the desert. Those enemies will watch the towns of Judah, and like leopards they will tear to pieces whoever goes outside.

When they hear my message, perhaps they will see that they need to turn back to me and stop worshipping those idols.
