Long ago you left me and broke all ties between us, refusing to be my servant. Now you worship other gods by having sex on hilltops or in the shade of large trees.

He also decided to start a new festival for the Israelites on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, just like the one in Judah. On that day, Jeroboam went to Bethel and offered sacrifices on the altar to the gold calf he had put there. Then he assigned the priests their duties.

They also built their own local shrines and stone images of foreign gods, and they set up sacred poles for worshipping the goddess Asherah on every hill and in the shade of large trees.

He brought you out of the deepest darkness and broke your chains.

They say, “Let's cut the ropes and set ourselves free!”

God demanded all their love, but they made him angry by worshipping idols.

and they promised, “We will do everything the LORD has commanded.” So Moses told the LORD about this.

Then they will no longer rule your nation. All will go well for you, and your burden will be lifted.

I will wipe out every Assyrian in my country, and I will crush those on my mountains. I will free my people from slavery to the Assyrians.

You have broken the power of those who abused and enslaved your people. You have rescued them just as you saved your people from Midian.

One generation after another has set up pagan altars and worshipped the goddess Asherah everywhere in your country— on hills and mountains, and under large trees. So I'll take everything you own, including your altars, and give it all to your enemies.

Now listen to what I say! Did I abandon you in the desert or surround you with darkness? You are my people, yet you have told me, “We'll do what we want, and we refuse to worship you!”

Just admit that you rebelled and worshipped foreign gods under large trees everywhere.

Now you are slaves of other nations, but I will break the chains and smash the yokes that keep you in slavery.

I'll go and talk to the leaders. They know what God demands.” But even they had decided not to obey the LORD.

You couldn't get enough sex, so you chased after Assyrians and slept with them. You still weren't satisfied,

You had sex on every street corner, and when you finished, you refused to accept money. That's worse than being a prostitute!

and burn down your houses. Other women will watch these terrible things happen to you. I promise to stop you from being a prostitute and paying your lovers for sex.

Even though Oholah was my wife, she continued to be a prostitute and chased after Assyrian lovers.

The LORD said, “Hosea, Israel has betrayed me like an unfaithful wife. Marry such a woman and have children by her.”

Your mother was unfaithful. She was disgraceful and said, “I'll run after my lovers. Everything comes from them— my food and drink, my linen and wool, my olive oil and wine.”

Then I said, “Now you are mine! You will have to remain faithful to me, though it will be a long time before we sleep together.”

You offer sacrifices on mountaintops and hills, under oak trees, and wherever good shade is found. Your own daughters and daughters-in-law sell themselves for sex.

Israel, don't celebrate or make noisy shouts like other nations. You have been unfaithful to your God. Wherever grain is threshed, you behave like prostitutes because you enjoy the money you receive.

I am the LORD your God, and I rescued you from Egypt, so that you would never again be slaves. I have set you free; now walk with your heads held high.

I'll snap your chains and set you free from the Assyrians.”

But the nations that live there worship other gods. So after you capture the land, you must completely destroy their places of worship—on mountains and hills or in the shade of large trees.

I am commanding you to obey the LORD as a reminder that you were slaves in Egypt before he set you free.

In response, you have agreed that the LORD will be your God, that you will obey all his laws and teachings, and that you will listen when he speaks to you.

But you are the LORD's people, because he led you through fiery trials and rescued you from Egypt.

Moses, go up close and listen to the LORD. Then come back and tell us, and we will do everything he says.

The men answered: We'll cross the River Jordan and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us.

The people said, “The LORD is our God, and we will worship and obey only him.”

and wrote them down in The Book of the Law of God. Then he set up a large stone under the oak tree at the place of worship in Shechem

One of the seven angels who had emptied the bowls came over and said to me, “Come on! I will show you how God will punish that shameless prostitute who sits on many oceans.

Before long, the Israelites began disobeying the LORD by worshipping Baal, Astarte, and gods from Syria, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia.

The LORD had brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they had worshipped him. But now the Israelites stopped worshipping the LORD and worshipped the idols of Baal and Astarte, as well as the idols of other gods from nearby nations. The LORD was so angry

Again your ancestors cried out to the LORD for help. They said, “We have sinned! We stopped worshipping you, our LORD, and started worshipping Baal and Astarte. But now, if you rescue us from our enemies, we will worship you.”
