You have been a place of safety for the poor and needy in times of trouble. Brutal enemies pounded us like a heavy rain or the heat of the sun at midday, but you were our shelter.

The LORD is good. He protects those who trust him in times of trouble.

I trust you for protection in times of trouble, so don't frighten me.

You were rescued from the useless way of life that you learnt from your ancestors. But you know that you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don't last for ever.

An idol is no better than a scarecrow. It can't speak, and it has to be carried, because it can't walk. Why worship an idol that can't help or harm you?

Why make an idol or an image that can't do a thing?

You created each nation, and they will all bow down to worship and honour you.

In times of trouble, you will protect me. You will hide me in your tent and keep me safe on top of a mighty rock.

Let my words and my thoughts be pleasing to you, LORD, because you are my mighty rock and my protector.

They once taught my people to worship Baal. But if they admit I am the only true God, and if they let my people teach them how to worship me, these nations will also become my people.

When that happens, all nations on earth will see the good things I have done for Jerusalem, and how I have given it complete peace. The nations will celebrate and praise and honour me, but they will also tremble with fear.

From the heart of Jerusalem the LORD roars like a lion, shaking the earth and sky. But the LORD is a fortress, a place of safety for his people Israel.

The LORD said: I will punish Judah for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. They have rejected my teachings and refused to obey me. They were led astray by the same false gods their ancestors worshipped.

I praise you, LORD! I prayed, and you rescued me from my enemies.

Our terrible sins get us down, but you forgive us.

Their religion is worthless! They chop down a tree, carve the wood into an idol,

You're our only hope; you alone can save us now. You help us one day, but you're gone the next.
