Israel, you are a sinful nation loaded down with guilt. You are wicked and corrupt and have turned from the LORD, the holy God of Israel.

Now his message to you will be senseless sound after senseless sound. Then you will fall backwards, injured and trapped.

The Egyptians are mere humans. They aren't God. Their horses are made of flesh; they can't live for ever. When the LORD shows his power, he will destroy the Egyptians and all who depend on them. Together they will fall.

I will punish my people, because they are guilty of turning from me to worship idols.

Then I will smash them against each other like jars. I will have no pity on the young or the old, and they will all be destroyed. I, the LORD, have spoken.

You, my people, have sinned in two ways— you have rejected me, the source of life-giving water, and you've tried to collect water in cracked and leaking pits dug in the ground.

It's all your own fault! You stopped following me, the LORD your God,

Your own sins will punish you, because it was a bitter mistake for you to reject me without fear of punishment. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

Sometimes I tell myself not to think about you, LORD, or even mention your name. But your message burns in my heart and bones, and I cannot keep silent.

And when he could no longer put up with your disgusting sins, he placed a curse on your land and turned it into a desert, as it is today.

Your anger against Judah flames up inside me, and I can't hold it in much longer. Don't hold back my anger! Let it sweep away everyone— the children at play and all adults, young and old alike.

I'll punish the people of Judah and give to others their houses and fields, as well as their wives. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Jeremiah, don't pray for these people! I, the LORD, would refuse to listen.

But your ancestors refused to listen. They were stubborn, and whenever I wanted them to go one-way, they always went the other.

So why do you refuse to come back to me? Why do you hold so tightly to your false gods?

Your wise men have rejected what I say, and so they have no wisdom. Now they will be trapped and put to shame; they won't know what to do.

If a prophet gives a false message, I am the one who caused that prophet to lie. But I will still reject him and cut him off from my people,

And so I will hand you over to enemies who will rob you. I will completely destroy you. There won't be enough of your people left to be a nation ever again, and you will know that I, the LORD, have done these things.

and say to them: I, the LORD God, am now your enemy! And I will turn your nation into an empty wasteland,

My people are determined to reject me for a god they think is stronger, but he can't help.

Should I, the LORD, rescue you from death and the grave? No! I call death and the grave to strike you like a plague. I refuse to show mercy.

You are nothing more than a stubborn cow— so stubborn that I, the LORD, cannot feed you like lambs in an open pasture.

I will reach out to punish Judah and Jerusalem— nothing will remain of the god Baal; nothing will be remembered of his pagan priests.

But everyone who heard those prophets, stubbornly refused to obey. Instead, they turned their backs on everything my Spirit had commanded the earlier prophets to preach. So I, the LORD, became angry
