Too much pride will destroy you.

We have heard of Moab's pride. Its people strut and boast, but without reason.

The LORD All-Powerful planned it to bring shame and disgrace to those who are honoured by everyone on earth.

I started with Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, and the king and his officials were removed from power in disgrace. Everyone still makes insulting jokes about them and uses their names as curse words.

I know about your pride, and how you strut and boast.

They thought they were better than everyone else, and they did things I hate. And so I destroyed them.

Jerusalem, you were so arrogant that you sneered at Sodom.

until your pride is completely crushed. I will hold back the rain, so the sky above you will be like iron, and the ground beneath your feet will be like copper.

Judah and Israel are like trees with branches broken by their enemies. But the LORD is going to restore their power and glory.

When that time comes, you won't rebel against me and be put to shame. I'll do away with those who are proud and arrogant. Never will any of them strut around on my holy mountain.

Then Jesus said, “When the two men went home, it was the tax collector and not the Pharisee who was pleasing to God. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honoured.”

In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, “God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble.”

All you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble towards everyone else. The Scriptures say, “God opposes proud people, but he helps everyone who is humble.”
