This is what God has decided for those who are evil.

He will send fiery coals and flaming sulphur down on the wicked, and they will drink nothing but a scorching wind.

The wicked will go down to the world of the dead to be with those nations that forgot about you.

When that time comes, the glorious nation of Israel will be brought down; its prosperous people will be skin and bones.

Do you think you have an agreement with death and the world of the dead? Why do you trust in your lies to keep you safe from danger and the mighty flood?

The LORD has decided where they each should live; they will be there for ever, generation after generation.

I, the LORD, will make them pay for their sins and for those of their ancestors— they have disgraced me by burning incense on mountains.

People who make idols are so stupid! They will be disappointed, because their false gods are not alive.

But you, my people, have turned from me to burn incense to worthless idols. You have left the ancient road to follow an unknown path where you stumble over idols.

You, my people, have sinned in two ways— you have rejected me, the source of life-giving water, and you've tried to collect water in cracked and leaking pits dug in the ground.

A bride could not forget to wear her jewellery to her wedding, but you have forgotten me day after day.

Listen to the noise on the hilltops! It's the people of Israel, weeping and begging me to answer their prayers. They forgot about me and chose the wrong path.

You have completely rejected me, and so I promise that you will be punished for the disgusting things you did as a prostitute.

You leaders accept bribes for dishonest decisions. You priests and prophets teach and preach, but only for money. Then you say, “The LORD is on our side. No harm will come to us.”

For ever rebellious and rejecting correction, Jerusalem refuses to trust or obey the LORD God.

That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the ones who only pretended to serve their master. There they will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

They gave up the truth about God for a lie, and they worshipped God's creation instead of God, who will be praised for ever. Amen.
