Everyone in these two countries will be led away naked and barefoot by the king of Assyria. Young or old, they will be taken prisoner, and Egypt will be disgraced.

But I, the LORD, will cover their heads with sores, and I will uncover their private parts.

You think that you alone are all-powerful, that you won't be a widow or lose your children. All you care about is pleasure, but listen to what I say.

You were married to me, but you were unfaithful. You even became a prostitute by worshipping disgusting gods on hilltops and in fields. So I'll rip off your clothes and leave you naked and ashamed for everyone to see. You are doomed! Will you ever be worthy to worship me again?

And everyone who listens to them will be killed, just as they deserve. Their dead bodies will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem, because their families will also be dead, and no one will be left to bury them.

And the people who survive will ask, “Why did the LORD our God do such terrible things to us?” Then tell them: I am the LORD, but you abandoned me and worshipped other gods in your own land. Now you will be slaves in a foreign country.

Jerusalem's horrible sins have made the city a joke. Those who once admired her now hate her instead— she has been disgraced; she groans and turns away.

Your clothes and jewellery will be torn off.

You say to yourself, “I'm rich! I earned it all on my own, without committing a sin.”

Then I'll strip her naked in the sight of her lovers. No one can rescue her.

or I will strip her naked like the day she was born. I will make her barren like a desert, and she will die of thirst.

Your mother was unfaithful. She was disgraceful and said, “I'll run after my lovers. Everything comes from them— my food and drink, my linen and wool, my olive oil and wine.”

But I, the LORD All-Powerful, am now your enemy. I will pull up your skirt and let nations and kingdoms stare at your nakedness.

I'll search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those people who sit there unworried while thinking, “The LORD won't do anything, good or bad.”

You may be asking yourselves, “How can we tell if a prophet's message really comes from the LORD?”

You may be thinking, “How can we destroy these nations? They are more powerful than we are.”

When you become successful, don't say, “I'm rich, and I've earned it all myself.”
