The people of Judah are evil and stubborn. So instead of listening to me, they do whatever they want and even worship other gods. When I have finished with these people, they will be good for nothing, just like this pair of shorts.

They would be different from their ancestors, who were stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful to God.

Be cheerful and enjoy life while you are young! Do what you want and find pleasure in what you see. But don't forget that God will judge you for everything you do.

In place of perfume, there will be a stink; in place of belts, there will be ropes; in place of fancy hair styles, they will have bald heads. Instead of expensive clothes, they will wear sackcloth; instead of beauty, they will have ugly scars.

They have sinned in the same way their ancestors did, by turning from me and worshipping other gods. The northern kingdom of Israel broke the agreement I made with your ancestors, and now the southern kingdom of Judah has done the same.

Some people plotted to kill me. And like a lamb being led to the butcher, I knew nothing about their plans. But then the LORD told me that they had planned to chop me down like a tree— fruit and all— so that no one would ever remember me again.

I went back and dug the shorts out of their hiding place, but the cloth had rotted, and the shorts were ruined.

And you have done even worse! You are stubborn, and instead of obeying me, you do whatever evil comes to your mind.

They will die of horrible diseases and of war and starvation. No one will give them a funeral or bury them, and their bodies will be food for the birds and wild animals. And what's left will lie on the ground like manure.

You will be afraid, and you will bring fear to your friends as well. You will see enemies kill them in battle. Then I will make the king of Babylonia take everyone in Judah prisoner, killing some and dragging the rest away to Babylonia.

When times were good, I warned you. But you ignored me, just as you have done since Israel was young.

These prophets go to people who refuse to respect me and who are stubborn and do whatever they want. The prophets tell them, “The LORD has promised everything will be fine.”

The whole city of Jerusalem will be my throne. All nations will come here to worship me, and they will no longer follow their stubborn, evil hearts.

You refused to listen to my prophets, who kept telling you, “Stop doing evil and worshipping other gods! Start obeying the LORD, and he will let you live in this land he gave your ancestors.”

Jeremiah, what do we care if you speak in the LORD's name? We refuse to listen!

but they refused to listen and would not stop worshipping other gods.

You stubborn people have rebelled and turned your backs on me.

While you have been sinning, I have been trying to talk to you, but you refuse to listen.

Stop taking advantage of foreigners, orphans, and widows. Don't kill innocent people. And stop worshipping other gods.

So why do you refuse to come back to me? Why do you hold so tightly to your false gods?

The LORD said: I destroyed the land because the people disobeyed me and rejected my laws and teachings.

They were stubborn and worshipped Baal, just as their ancestors did.

Everyone takes advantage of everyone else, and no one will admit that I am God.

The LORD said to Moses, “I have done great things for these people, and they still reject me by refusing to believe in my power.

You stubborn and hard-headed people! You are always fighting against the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did.

Make sure that you obey the one who speaks to you. The people did not escape, when they refused to obey the one who spoke to them at Mount Sinai. Do you think you can possibly escape, if you refuse to obey the one who speaks to you from heaven?
