Whenever I complain to you, LORD, you are always fair. But now I have questions about your justice. Why is life easy for sinners? Why are they successful?

You surely wouldn't let them be killed when you destroy the evil ones. You are the judge of all the earth, and you do what is right.”

LORD God of Israel, you have been more than fair by letting a few of us survive. But once again, our sins have made us ashamed to face you.

You have always been fair when you punished us for our sins.

Robbers and other godless people live safely at home and say, “God is in our hands!”

But I prefer to argue my case with God All-Powerful—

And along the city streets, the wounded and dying cry out, yet God does nothing.

God may let them feel secure, but they are never out of his sight.

They wrap their roots tightly around rocks.

You are kind, LORD, so good and merciful.

Our LORD, you always do right, and your decisions are fair.

Your decisions are correct, and you were right to punish me.

Our LORD, everything you do is kind and thoughtful,

Don't be annoyed by anyone who does wrong, and don't envy them.

I have seen brutal people abuse others and grow strong like trees in rich soil.

You are really the one I have sinned against; I have disobeyed you and have done wrong. So it is right and fair for you to correct and punish me.

But you want complete honesty, so teach me true wisdom.

Though the wicked sprout and spread like grass, they will be pulled up by their roots.

Sin and self-satisfaction bring destruction and death to stupid fools.

There is something else that doesn't make sense to me. Good citizens are treated as criminals, while criminals are honoured as though they were good citizens.

I am the LORD, the King of Israel! Come, argue your case with me. Present your evidence.

You have never been willing to listen to what I say; from the moment of your birth, I knew you would rebel.

I prayed, “LORD All-Powerful, you always do what is right, and you know every thought. So I trust you to help me and to take revenge.”

Even your own family has turned against you. They act friendly, but don't trust them. They're out to get you, and so is everyone else.

But instead, you are like a wife who broke her wedding vows. You have been unfaithful to me. I, the LORD, have spoken.

I knew that the kingdom of Israel had been unfaithful and committed many sins, yet I still hoped she might come back to me. But she didn't, so I divorced her and sent her away. Her sister, the kingdom of Judah, saw what happened, but she wasn't worried in the least, and I watched her become unfaithful like her sister.

In every way, Judah and Israel have been unfaithful to me.

I wish I could go into the desert and find a hiding place from all who are treacherous and unfaithful to God.

The LORD was right, but I refused to obey him. Now I ask all of you to look at my sufferings— even my young people have been dragged away.

You people of Israel accuse me of being unfair! But listen—I'm not unfair; you are!

And when you finally punished us with this horrible disaster, that was also the right thing to do, because we deserved it so much.

Everything you do is right, our Lord. But still we suffer public disgrace because we have been unfaithful and have sinned against you. This includes all of us, both far and near—the people of Judah, Jerusalem, and Israel, as well as those you dragged away to foreign lands,

At a place named Adam, you betrayed me by breaking our agreement.

Laws cannot be enforced; justice is always the loser; criminals crowd out honest people and twist the laws around.

All who do evil are shameless, but the LORD does right and is always fair. With the dawn of each day, God brings about justice.

You have worn out the LORD with your words. And yet, you ask, “How did we do that?” You did it by saying, “The LORD is pleased with evil and doesn't care about justice.”

See how happy those arrogant people are. Everyone who does wrong is successful, and when they put God to the test, they always get away with it.”

The LORD is a mighty rock, and he never does wrong. God can always be trusted to bring justice.
