Well, our ancestor Abraham pleased God by putting his son Isaac on the altar to sacrifice him.

I am your servant. Don't try me in your court, because no one is innocent by your standards.

God chose Abraham and Sarah to be your ancestors. The LORD blessed Abraham, and from that one man came many descendants.

On that day they will be told that they are either innocent or guilty because of the things they have said.

And don't start telling yourselves that you belong to Abraham's family. I tell you that God can turn these stones into children for Abraham.

He told our ancestor Abraham

he said to Abraham, “Have pity on me! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and touch my tongue. I'm suffering terribly in this fire.”

Then the rich man said, “No, that's not enough! If only someone from the dead would go to them, they would listen and turn to God.”

The people said to Jesus, “Abraham is our father!” Jesus replied, “If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did.

Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

Stephen answered: Friends, listen to me. Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he had moved to Haran.

God doesn't accept people simply because they obey the Law. No, indeed! All the Law does is to point out our sin.

Well then, what can we say about our ancestor Abraham?

This also makes Abraham the father of everyone who is circumcised and has faith in God, as Abraham did before he was circumcised.

Everything depends on having faith in God, so that God's promise is assured by his great kindness. This promise isn't only for Abraham's descendants who have the Law. It is for all who are Abraham's descendants because they have faith, just as he did. Abraham is the ancestor of us all.

Abraham had been promised that Isaac, his only son, would continue his family. But when Abraham was tested, he had faith and was willing to sacrifice Isaac,

Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.” I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

You can now see that we please God by what we do and not only by what we believe.

But I brought Abraham across the River Euphrates and led him through the land of Canaan. I blessed him by giving him Isaac, the first in a line of many descendants.
