Too much pride will destroy you.

Your hand is raised and ready to punish them, but they don't see it. Put them to shame! Show how much you care for us and throw them into the fire intended for your enemies.

The city of Samaria above a fertile valley is in for trouble! Its leaders are drunkards, who stuff themselves with food and wine. But they will be like flowers that dry up and wilt.

Every drunkard in Ephraim takes pride in Samaria, but it will be crushed.

You people are stubborn and far from being safe, so listen to me.

I knew you were stubborn and hard-headed.

When news reached the royal palace that Syria had joined forces with Israel, King Ahaz and everyone in Judah were so terrified that they shook like trees in a storm.

The Lord had warned the people of Israel,

Jerusalem is under attack, and we suffer from hunger and disease. The Babylonians have already built earth ramps up to the city walls, and you can see that Jerusalem will be captured just as you said.

When I've finished punishing Egypt, you will know that I am the LORD.

Soon they will be punished, just as you warned, and they will know that a prophet has been among them.

Even your king and his officials will lose hope and cry in despair. Your hands will tremble with fear. I will punish you for your sins and treat you the same way you have treated others. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

Your sins are so terrible, that you'll get no mercy from me. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have punished you.

Israel, I created you, but you forgot me. You and Judah built palaces and many strong cities. Now I will send fire to destroy your towns and fortresses.

Esau's descendants may say, “Although our nation Edom is in ruins, we will rebuild.” But I, the LORD All-Powerful, promise to tear down whatever they build. Then everyone will know that I will never stop being angry with them as long as they are so sinful.

You have said horrible things about me, and yet you ask, “What have we said?”

The day of judgment is certain to come. And it will be like a red-hot furnace with flames that burn up proud and sinful people, as though they were straw. Not a branch or a root will be left. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken!

All you young people should obey your elders. In fact, everyone should be humble towards everyone else. The Scriptures say, “God opposes proud people, but he helps everyone who is humble.”
