You refused to answer when I called out; you paid no attention to my instructions. Instead, you did what I hated, knowing it was wrong. Now I will punish you in a way you dread the most.

Manasseh disobeyed the LORD by following the disgusting customs of the nations that the LORD had forced out of Israel.

and even set up the pole for Asherah there. Manasseh practised magic and witchcraft; he asked fortune-tellers for advice and sacrificed his own son. He did many sinful things and made the LORD very angry. Years ago the LORD had told David and his son Solomon: Jerusalem is the place I prefer above all others in Israel. It belongs to me, and there I will be worshipped for ever.

So I let you be stubborn and keep on following your own advice.

Your luck will end! I will see to it that you are slaughtered with swords. You refused to answer when I called out; you paid no attention to my instructions. Instead, you did what I hated, knowing it was wrong.

All day long I have reached out to stubborn and sinful people going their own way.

They keep making me angry by sneering at me, while offering sacrifices to idols in gardens and burning incense to them on bricks.

I, the LORD, will make them pay for their sins and for those of their ancestors— they have disgraced me by burning incense on mountains.

your God. I am the LORD All-Powerful, and I warned you about the terrible things that would happen to you if you did not listen to me. You have ignored me, so now disaster will strike you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

While you have been sinning, I have been trying to talk to you, but you refuse to listen.

You have disobeyed me by putting your disgusting idols in my temple, and now the temple itself is disgusting to me.

and I'll send armies to attack you, just as you fear.

Tell the people of Israel that if they sin by worshipping idols and then go to a prophet to find out what I say, I will give them the answer their sins deserve.

I gave them laws that bring punishment instead of life,

False messiahs and false prophets will come and perform great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones.

The people would not listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want to be like other nations. We want a king to rule us and lead us in battle.”
