People of Jerusalem, you don't need to cry any more. The Lord is kind, and as soon as he hears your cries for help, he will come.

Pray to me in time of trouble. I will rescue you, and you will honour me.

Now the LORD God All-Powerful says to his people in Jerusalem: The Assyrians will beat you with sticks and abuse you, just as the Egyptians did. But don't be afraid of them.

The LORD All-Powerful will destroy the power of death and wipe away all tears. No longer will his people be insulted everywhere. The LORD has spoken!

Please, LORD, be kind to us! We depend on you. Make us strong each morning, and come to save us when we are in trouble.

The people the LORD has rescued will come back singing as they enter Zion. Happiness will be a crown they will always wear. They will celebrate and shout because all sorrows and worries will be gone far away.

When the poor and needy are dying of thirst and cannot find water, I, the LORD God of Israel, will come to their rescue. I won't forget them.

I will soon come to save you. I am not far away and will waste no time; I take pride in Israel and will save Jerusalem.

When you beg the LORD for help, he will answer, “Here I am!” Don't ill-treat others or falsely accuse them or say something cruel.

Your sun will never set or your moon go down. I, the LORD, will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will come to an end.

Celebrate and be glad for ever! I am creating a Jerusalem, full of happy people.

I will celebrate with Jerusalem and all its people; there will be no more crying or sorrow in that city.

I will answer their prayers before they finish praying.

I have chosen the people of Israel and Judah, and I will bless them with many descendants. They will settle here in this land of mountains, and it will be theirs.

The LORD said: My people, you are wounded and near death.

My people will come to Mount Zion and celebrate; their faces will glow because of my blessings. I'll give them grain, grapes, and olive oil, as well as sheep and cattle. Israel will be prosperous and grow like a garden with plenty of water.

But I, the LORD, tell you to dry your tears. Some day your children will come home from the enemy's land. Then all you have done for them will be greatly rewarded. So don't lose hope. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Some day those who guard the hill country of Ephraim will shout, “Let's go to Zion and worship the LORD our God.”

They will weep and pray as I bring them home. I will lead them to streams of water. They will walk on a level road and not stumble. I am a father to Israel, my favourite children.

Ask me, and I will tell you things that you don't know and can't find out.

The Babylonian army destroyed my temple, but soon I will take revenge. Then refugees from Babylon will tell about it in Zion.

The people of Israel said, “Tell everyone in Zion! The LORD has taken revenge for what Babylon did to us.”

When that day comes, everyone in Israel will worship me on Mount Zion, my holy mountain in Jerusalem. I will once again call you my own, and I will accept your sacred offerings and sacrifices.

I will once again answer your prayers, and I will let your nation grow until you are like a large flock of sheep.

Jerusalem, why are you crying? Don't you have a king? Have your advisers gone? Are you suffering like a woman in childbirth?

God will bless you hungry people. You will have plenty to eat! God will bless you people who are crying. You will laugh!

In this way all Israel will be saved, as the Scriptures say, “From Zion someone will come to rescue us. Then Jacob's descendants will stop being evil.

I pray that Christ Jesus and the church will for ever bring praise to God. His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Amen.

I cried hard because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or see inside it.

The Lamb in the centre of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to streams of life-giving water, and God will wipe all tears from their eyes.”
