Judah was an empty desert, and it stayed that way for seventy years, to make up for all the years it was not allowed to rest. These things happened just as Jeremiah the LORD's prophet had said.

Only a few of their warriors will be left with bows and arrows. This is a promise that I, the LORD God of Israel, have made.

That peg is fastened firmly now, but some day it will be shaken loose and fall down. Then everything that was hanging on it will be destroyed. This is what the LORD All-Powerful has promised.

The LORD is going to twist the earth out of shape and turn it into a desert. Everyone will be scattered,

including ordinary people and priests, slaves and slave owners, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, the rich and the poor.

The earth wilts away; its mighty leaders melt to nothing.

But his people were trapped and imprisoned in holes with no one to rescue them. All they owned had been taken, and no one was willing to give it back.

It will turn into a desert, neither pruned nor hoed; it will be covered with thorns and briars. I will command the clouds not to send rain.

Then I asked the LORD, “How long will this last?” The LORD answered: Until their towns are destroyed and their houses are deserted, until their fields are empty,

People of Judah, don't be too proud to listen to what the LORD has said.

So all you mountains and hills, streams and valleys, listen to what I will do. Your towns may now lie in ruins, and nations may laugh and insult you.

When that happens, this sorrowful song will be sung about you: “Ruined! Completely ruined! The LORD has taken our land and given it to traitors.”

Everyone will find rest beneath their own fig trees or grapevines, and they will live in peace. This is a solemn promise of the LORD All-Powerful.

has become a scorching desert of salt and sulphur, where nothing is planted, nothing sprouts, and nothing grows. It will be as lifeless as the land around the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, after the LORD became angry and destroyed them.
