What a horrible vision was shown to me— a vision of betrayal and destruction. Tell Elam and Media to surround and attack the Babylonians. The LORD has sworn to end the suffering they caused.

All those unfaithful people who refuse to obey you are disgusting to me.

But you, LORD, tell them, “I will do something! The poor are ill-treated and helpless people moan. I'll rescue all who suffer.”

Don't disappoint any of your worshippers, but disappoint all deceitful liars.

Then you will make fun of the king of Babylonia by singing this song: That cruel monster is done for! He won't attack us again.

Now all the world is at peace; its people are celebrating with joyful songs.

The people of Elam and Kir attacked with chariots and carried shields.

From all over the world songs of praise are heard for the God of justice. But I feel awful, terribly miserable. Can anyone be trusted? So many are treacherous!

You defeated my people. Now you're in for trouble! You've never been destroyed, but you will be destroyed; you've never been betrayed, but you will be betrayed. When you have finished destroying and betraying, you will be destroyed and betrayed in return.

The people the LORD has rescued will come back singing as they enter Zion. Happiness will be a crown they will always wear. They will celebrate and shout because all sorrows and worries will be gone far away.

I was angry with my people. So I let you take their land and bring disgrace on them. You showed them no mercy, but were especially cruel to those who were old.

People of Israel, you are my own dear children. Don't I love you best of all? Though I often make threats, I want you to be near me, so I will have mercy on you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Those who feel tired and worn out will find new life and energy,

You are moaning and blaming me, the LORD, for your troubles and sorrow, and for being so tired that you can't even rest.

Not long after Zedekiah became king of Judah, the LORD told me to say: People of Elam, I, the LORD All-Powerful, will kill the archers who make your army strong.

Babylon has rebelled against me. Archers, take your places. Shoot all your arrows at Babylon.

But I, the LORD All-Powerful, will rescue and protect them. I will bring peace to their land and trouble to yours.

I, the LORD, want Babylon destroyed, because its army destroyed my temple. So, you kings of Media, sharpen your arrows and pick up your shields.

I will punish Marduk, the god of Babylon, and make him vomit everything he gobbled up. Then nations will no longer bring him gifts, and Babylon's walls will crumble.

Although Babylon's walls reach to the sky, the army I send will destroy that city. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Don't let their evil deeds escape your sight. Punish them as much as you have punished me because of my sins. I never stop groaning— I've lost all hope!
