I will put the Egyptians under the power of a cruel, heartless king. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have promised this.”

About this same time, the king of Assyria learnt that King Tirhakah of Ethiopia was on his way to attack him. Then the king of Assyria sent some messengers with this note for Hezekiah:

I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, the God who saves you. I gave up Egypt, Ethiopia, and the region of Seba in exchange for you.

My children and I are warning signs to Israel from the LORD All-Powerful, who lives on Mount Zion.

The LORD told me, “Go and buy a pair of linen shorts. Wear them for a while, but don't wash them.”

Lift the bag to your shoulders, and with your face covered, take it into the darkness, so that you cannot see the land you are leaving. All this will be a warning for the people of Israel.

Your own nation of Egypt will be attacked, and Ethiopia will suffer. You will be killed in battle, and your land will be robbed and left in ruins.

All your allies will be killed, and your proud strength will crumble. People will die from Migdol in the north to Aswan in the south. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Ezekiel, son of man, find a brick and sketch a picture of Jerusalem on it.

Set up an iron pan like a wall between you and the brick. All this will be a warning for the people of Israel.

People of Ethiopia, the sword of the LORD will slaughter you!

Listen carefully, High Priest Joshua and all you other priests. You are a sign of things to come, because I am going to bring back my servant, the Chosen King.

I will cruelly punish you every day for the next forty years—one year for each day that the land was explored.
