During Menahem's rule, King Tiglath Pileser of Assyria invaded Israel. He agreed to help Menahem keep control of his kingdom, if Menahem would pay him thirty-four thousand kilogrammes of silver.

You trust Egypt for protection. So you refuse my advice and send messengers to Egypt to beg their king for help.

This is a message about the animals of the Southern Desert: you people carry treasures on donkeys and camels. You travel to a feeble nation through a troublesome desert filled with lions and flying fiery dragons.

You are a female donkey sniffing the desert air, wanting to mate with just anyone. You are an easy catch!

All day long Israel chases wind from the desert; deceit and violence are found everywhere. Treaties are made with Assyria; olive oil is taken to Egypt.

The LORD also brings charges against the people of Judah, the descendants of Jacob. He will punish them for what they have done.

Then I'll strip her naked in the sight of her lovers. No one can rescue her.

When Israel and Judah saw their sickness and wounds, Israel asked help from Assyria and its mighty king. But the king cannot cure them or heal their wounds.

Israel is a senseless bird, fluttering back and forth between Egypt and Assyria.
