Won't you chop off all flattering tongues that boast so loudly?

They say to themselves, “We are great speakers. No one else has a chance.”

But you, LORD, tell them, “I will do something! The poor are ill-treated and helpless people moan. I'll rescue all who suffer.”

They refuse to show mercy, and they keep boasting.

You plan brutal crimes, and your lying words cut like a sharp razor.

I live among lions, who gobble up people! They have spears and arrows instead of teeth, and they have sharp swords instead of tongues.

They dare to speak against God and to order others around.

they were unfaithful and broke their promises.

They were as unfaithful as their ancestors, and they were as crooked as a twisted arrow.

Jerusalem and Judah, you rebelled against your glorious LORD— your words and your actions, made you stumble and fall.

Some of the people said, “Let's get rid of Jeremiah! We will always have priests to teach us God's laws, as well as wise people to give us advice, and prophets to speak the LORD's messages. So, instead of listening to Jeremiah any longer, let's accuse him of a crime.”

And worst of all, the people of Judah pretended to come back to me.

I, the LORD, was angry with the people of Jerusalem and punished them. And if you go to Egypt, I will be angry and punish you the same way. You will never again see your homeland. People will be horrified at what I do to you, and they will use the name of your city as a curse word.

I, the LORD God, gave your sister a large, deep cup filled with my anger. And when you drink from that cup, you will be mocked and insulted.

Wherever they went, my name was disgraced, because foreigners insulted my people by saying I had forced them out of their own land.

“This king will speak evil of God Most High, and he will be cruel to God's chosen ones. He will try to change God's Law and the sacred seasons. And he will be able to do this for a time, two times, and half a time.

But they trusted Egypt instead of returning to me; now Assyria will rule them.

My people are determined to reject me for a god they think is stronger, but he can't help.

People of Israel and Judah, what can I do with you? Your love for me disappears more quickly than mist or dew at sunrise.

Trouble and destruction will be their reward for rejecting me. I would have rescued them, but they told me lies.

and you will have to leave the land of the LORD. Some of you will go to Egypt; others will go to Assyria and eat unclean food.

You won't be able to offer sacrifices of wine to the LORD. None of your sacrifices will please him— they will be unclean like food offered to the dead. Your food will only be used to satisfy your hunger; none of it will be brought to the LORD's temple.

Even if you escape alive, you will end up in Egypt and be buried in Memphis. Your silver treasures will be lost among weeds; thorns will sprout in your tents.

You have said horrible things about me, and yet you ask, “What have we said?”

Here is what you have said: “It's foolish to serve the LORD God All-Powerful. What do we get for obeying him and from going around looking sad?

I promise you that on the day of judgment, everyone will have to account for every careless word they have spoken.

The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don't have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up.

Our tongues are small too, and yet they boast about big things. It takes only a spark to start a forest fire!

The beast was allowed to boast and claim to be God, and for forty-two months it was allowed to rule.
