Israel, your pride testifies to your guilt; it makes you stumble, and Judah stumbles too.

You can be sure of this: all crooks will be punished, but God's people won't.

If you are truly good, you will do right; if you are wicked, you will be destroyed by your own sin.

In times of trouble the wicked are destroyed, but even at death the innocent have faith.

Even if good people fall seven times, they will get back up. But when trouble strikes the wicked, that's the end of them.

Some people are stuck-up and act like snobs;

Jerusalem and Judah, you rebelled against your glorious LORD— your words and your actions, made you stumble and fall.

The look on your faces shows that you are sinful as Sodom, and you don't try to hide it. You are in for trouble, and you have brought it all on yourselves.

Those people who make idols are nothing themselves, and the idols they treasure are just as worthless. Worshippers of idols are blind, stupid, and foolish.

How often have we sinned and turned against you, the LORD God? Our sins condemn us! We have done wrong.

Our terrible sins may demand that we be punished. But if you rescue us, LORD, everyone will see how great you are.

Your own sins will punish you, because it was a bitter mistake for you to reject me without fear of punishment. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

Israel, return! Come back to the LORD, your God. Sin has made you fall.

Return to the LORD and say, “Please forgive our sins. Accept our good sacrifices of praise instead of bulls.

You and the prophets will stumble day and night; I'll silence your mothers.

So I'll become a fierce lion attacking Israel and Judah. I'll snatch and carry off what I want, and no one can stop me.

I am the LORD, their God, but in all their troubles their pride keeps them from returning to me.

Israel, I created you, but you forgot me. You and Judah built palaces and many strong cities. Now I will send fire to destroy your towns and fortresses.

you, dearest Israel, have fallen, never to rise again— you lie deserted in your own land, with no one to help you up.

But you prove that you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets.

“You worthless servant!” the king told him. “You have condemned yourself by what you have just said. You knew that I am a hard man, taking what isn't mine and harvesting what I haven't planted.
