We will burn incense and offer sacrifices of wine to her, just as we, our ancestors, our kings, and our leaders did when we lived in Jerusalem and the other towns of Judah. We had plenty of food back then. We were well off, and nothing bad ever happened to us.

You dressed them in the clothes you got from me, and you offered them the olive oil and incense I gave you.

When I saw you again, you were old enough to have sex. So I covered your naked body with my own robe. Then I solemnly promised that you would belong to me and that I, the LORD God, would take care of you.

They may think they can be like other nations and get away with worshipping idols made of wood and stone. But that will never happen!

Oholibah also chased after good-looking Assyrian officers, uniformed soldiers, and cavalry troops.

The LORD God said: Oholibah, though you no longer want to be with your lovers, they will surround you like enemies, when I turn them against you.

The elder one was named Oholah, which stands for Samaria; the younger one was Oholibah, which stands for Jerusalem. They became my wives and gave birth to my children.

His mind became like that of an animal, and he was forced to stay away from people and live with wild donkeys. Your father ate grass like an ox, and he slept outside where his body was soaked with dew. He was forced to do this until he learnt that the Most High God rules all kingdoms on earth and chooses their kings.

The LORD said, “Hosea, Israel has betrayed me like an unfaithful wife. Marry such a woman and have children by her.”

I fed you till you were satisfied, then you became proud and forgot about me.

Israel, return! Come back to the LORD, your God. Sin has made you fall.

I promise that from that day on, you will call me your husband instead of your master.

When Israel and Judah saw their sickness and wounds, Israel asked help from Assyria and its mighty king. But the king cannot cure them or heal their wounds.

Then I'll return to my temple until they confess their guilt and worship me, until they are desperate and beg for my help.
