Your mother was unfaithful. She was disgraceful and said, “I'll run after my lovers. Everything comes from them— my food and drink, my linen and wool, my olive oil and wine.”

Jerusalem, you are like an unfaithful wife. Once your judges were honest and your people lived right; now you are a city full of murderers.

The LORD says, “Children, I didn't divorce your mother or sell you to pay debts; I divorced her and sold you because of your sins.

Do you know why your clothes were torn off and you were abused? It was because of your terrible sins.

Long ago you left me and broke all ties between us, refusing to be my servant. Now you worship other gods by having sex on hilltops or in the shade of large trees.

Listen to me, you people of Jerusalem and Judah. I will abandon you, and your land will become an empty desert.

Jerusalem, you prostitute, listen to me.

Then I will hand you over to your lovers, who will tear down the places where you had sex. They will take your clothes and jewellery, leaving you naked and empty-handed.

When you were born, no one cut you loose from your mother or washed your body. No one rubbed your skin with salt and olive oil, and wrapped you in warm blankets.

The LORD said, “Hosea, Israel has betrayed me like an unfaithful wife. Marry such a woman and have children by her.”

Accuse! Accuse your mother! She is no longer my wife, and now I, the LORD, am not her husband. Beg her to give up prostitution and stop being unfaithful,

She didn't know that her grain, wine, and olive oil were gifts from me, as were the gold and silver she used in worshipping Baal.

Once again the LORD spoke to me. And this time he said, “Hosea, fall in love with an unfaithful woman who has a lover. Do this to show that I love the people of Israel, even though they worship idols and enjoy the offering cakes made with fruit.”

You and the prophets will stumble day and night; I'll silence your mothers.

You are like a wild donkey that goes its own way. You've run off to Assyria and hired them as allies.

Israel, when I, the LORD, found you long ago it was like finding grapes in a barren desert or tender young figs. Then you worshipped Baal-Peor, that disgusting idol, and you became as disgusting as the idol you loved.

Your beautiful young women and your young men will faint from thirst.

The Philistine rulers threw a big party and sacrificed a lot of animals to their god Dagon. The rulers said: Samson was our enemy, but our god Dagon helped us capture him!
