Israel, return! Come back to the LORD, your God. Sin has made you fall.

“Sir, why are you crying?” Hazael asked. Elisha answered, “Because I know the terrible things you will do to the people of Israel. You will burn down their walled cities and slaughter their young men. You will even crush the heads of their babies and rip open their pregnant women.”

After the LORD has punished Egypt, the people will turn to him. Then he will answer their prayers, and the Egyptians will be healed.

Your own sins will punish you, because it was a bitter mistake for you to reject me without fear of punishment. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

The LORD said: Israel, if you really want to come back to me, get rid of those disgusting idols.

Zion's glory has disappeared! And we are doomed because of our sins.

Your elder sister was Samaria, that city to your north with her nearby villages. Your younger sister was Sodom, that city to your south with her nearby villages.

Tell them that as surely as I am the living LORD God, I don't like to see wicked people die. I enjoy seeing them turn from their sins and live. So if the Israelites want to live, they must stop sinning and turn back to me.

Suppose I warn wicked people that they will die because of their sins, and they stop sinning and start doing right.

Plough your fields, scatter seeds of justice, and harvest faithfulness. Worship me, the LORD, and I will send my saving power down like rain.

So return to your God. Patiently trust him, and show love and justice.

You say to yourself, “I'm rich! I earned it all on my own, without committing a sin.”

Israel, you are done for. Don't expect help from me.

You encourage others to sin, so you can stuff yourselves on their sin offerings.

Israel, your pride testifies to your guilt; it makes you stumble, and Judah stumbles too.

Let's return to the LORD. He has torn us to shreds, but he will bandage our wounds and make us well.

Israel, when I first met you, I thought of you as palm trees growing in fertile ground. Now you lead your people out, only to be slaughtered.

Israel, the time has come. You will get what you deserve, and you will know it. “Prophets are fools,” you say. “And God's messengers are mad.” Your terrible guilt has filled you with hatred.

The LORD said: I will punish Ammon for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. In Gilead they ripped open pregnant women, just to take the land.
