But before he got there, they saw him coming and made plans to kill him.

and threw him into a dry well.

When the Midianite merchants came by, Joseph's brothers took him out of the well, and for twenty pieces of silver they sold him to the Ishmaelites who took him to Egypt.

to show that he was his favourite son, and so Joseph's brothers hated him and would not be friendly to him.

and said to one another, “We're being punished because of Joseph. We saw the trouble he was in, but we refused to help him when he begged us. That's why these terrible things are happening.”

Their attacks were so fierce that I nearly fell, but the LORD helped me.

Their words cut like swords, and their cruel remarks sting like sharp arrows.

I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.

They encouraged the followers and begged them to remain faithful. They told them, “We have to suffer a lot before we can get into God's kingdom.”
