Then Judah said to his father, “Let Benjamin go with me, and we will leave straight away, so that none of us will starve to death.

I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Now go down and buy some, so we won't starve to death.”

But Jacob said, “I won't let my son Benjamin go down to Egypt with the rest of you. His brother is already dead, and he is the only son I have left. I am an old man, and if anything happens to him on the way, I'll die from sorrow, and all of you will be to blame.”

So we told you, “Our father is a very old man. In fact, he was already old when Benjamin was born. Benjamin's brother is dead. Now Benjamin is the only one of the two brothers who is still alive, and our father loves him very much.”

But we answered, “We can't go back to Egypt without our youngest brother. We will never be let in to see the governor, unless he is with us.”

Also tell your brothers to take some wagons from Egypt for their wives and children to ride in. And they must be sure to bring their father.

Don't be afraid! I will take care of you and your children.” After Joseph said this, his brothers felt much better.

One of his officers replied, “We have a few horses left—why don't we let some men take five of them and go to the Syrian camp and see what's happening? We're going to die anyway like those who have already died.”

There's nothing to eat in the city, so we would starve if we went inside. But if we stay out here, we will die for certain. Let's sneak over to the Syrian army camp and surrender. They might kill us, but they might not.”

Beside the River Ahava, I asked the people to go without eating and to pray. We humbled ourselves and asked God to bring us and our children safely to Jerusalem with all our possessions.

And so my life is safe, and I will live to tell what the LORD has done.

Respect your father and your mother, and you will live a long time in the land I am giving you.

You were worried that your own children would be captured. But I, the LORD, will let them enter the land you have rejected.

Tribe of Reuben, you will live, even though your tribe will always be small.
