and said to one another, “We're being punished because of Joseph. We saw the trouble he was in, but we refused to help him when he begged us. That's why these terrible things are happening.”

The king's personal servant said: Now I remember what I was supposed to do.

“Sir, what can we say?” Judah replied. “How can we prove we are innocent? God has shown that we are guilty. And now all of us are your slaves, especially the one who had the cup.”

Joseph asked his brothers if his father was still alive, but they were too frightened to answer.

After Jacob died, Joseph's brothers said to each other, “What if Joseph still hates us and wants to get even with us for all the cruel things we did to him?”

David said, “I have disobeyed the LORD.” “Yes, you have!” Nathan answered. “You showed you didn't care what the LORD wanted. He has forgiven you, and you won't die. But your newborn son will.”

The woman shouted at Elijah, “What have I done to you? I thought you were God's prophet. Did you come here to cause the death of my son as a reminder that I've sinned against God?”

If you won't help the poor, don't expect to be heard when you cry out for help.

Don't give help to murderers! Make them stay on the run for as long as they live.

It's all your own fault! You stopped following me, the LORD your God,

Your own sins will punish you, because it was a bitter mistake for you to reject me without fear of punishment. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

You have disobeyed me by not giving your slaves their freedom. So I will give you freedom—the freedom to die in battle or from disease or hunger. I will make you disgusting to all other nations on earth.

“People of Judah, your hearts will be in pain, but it's your own fault that you will be punished.”

Then I'll return to my temple until they confess their guilt and worship me, until they are desperate and beg for my help.

But if you don't keep your promise, you will sin against the LORD and be punished.

God will be as hard on you as you are on others! He will treat you exactly as you treat them.

The worms there never die, and the fire never stops burning.

Let him warn my five brothers, so they won't come to this horrible place.”

Many who were followers now started telling everyone about the evil things they had been doing.

Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!

But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.

and he said, “I've cut off the thumbs and big toes of seventy kings and made those kings crawl around under my table for scraps of food. Now God is paying me back.” The army of Judah took the king of Bezek along with them to Jerusalem, where he died.
