Genesis 35:1

God told Jacob, “Return to Bethel, where I appeared to you when you were running from your brother Esau. Make your home there and build an altar for me.”

Abram travelled to the hill country east of Bethel and camped between Bethel and Ai, where he built another altar and worshipped the LORD.

and asked, “Hagar, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She answered, “I'm running away from Sarai, my owner.”

Abraham named that place “The LORD will Provide”. And even now people say, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

As Jacob continued on his way to the east,

and I am the God you worshipped at Bethel, when you poured olive oil on a rock and made a promise to me. Leave here straight away and return to the land where you were born.”

One day the LORD said, “Jacob, go back to your relatives in the land of your ancestors, and I will bless you.”

They answered, “Was it right to let our own sister be treated that way?”

and he named the place Bethel.

Jacob built an altar there and called it “God of Bethel”, because that was the place where God had appeared to him when he was running from Esau.

God is our mighty fortress, always ready to help in times of trouble.

and he chose for us the land that was the pride of Jacob, his favourite.

When you are in trouble, call out to me. I will answer and be there to protect and honour you.

When the king heard what Moses had done, the king wanted to kill him. But Moses escaped and went to the land of Midian. One day, Moses was sitting there by a well,

At Bethel, Jacob wrestled with an angel and won; then with tears in his eyes, he asked for a blessing, and God spoke to us there.

Look towards the mountains, people of Judah! Here comes a messenger with good news of peace. Celebrate your festivals. Keep your promises to God. Your evil enemies are destroyed and will never again invade your country.

When only a few of the LORD's people remain, when their strength is gone, and some of them are slaves, the LORD will feel sorry for them and give them justice.

Go on from there until you reach the big oak tree at Tabor, where you'll meet three men on their way to worship God at Bethel. One of them will be leading three young goats, another will be carrying three round loaves of bread, and the last one will be carrying a clay jar of wine.
