Jacob was so frightened that he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two groups.

Please rescue me from my brother. I am afraid he will come and attack not only me, but my wives and children as well.

Jacob sent messengers on ahead to Esau, who lived in the land of Seir, also known as Edom.

He thought, “If Esau attacks one group, perhaps the other can escape.”

Later that day Jacob met Esau coming with his four hundred men. So Jacob made his children walk with their mothers.

Afterwards, we'll go to Bethel. I will build an altar there for God, who answered my prayers when I was in trouble and who has always been at my side.

You were in serious trouble, but you prayed to the LORD, and he rescued you.

Life will go well for those who freely lend and are honest in business.

Even if you look, you won't see anyone who cares enough to walk beside me. There is no place to hide, and no one who really cares.

I hear the crowds whisper, “Everyone is afraid!” They are plotting and scheming to murder me.

I feel hopeless, and I cry out to you from a faraway land. Lead me to the mighty rock high above me.

When the Israelites saw the king coming with his army, they were frightened and begged the LORD for help.

Sound judgment and good sense will watch over you.

They learn this from their God.

I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as innocent as doves.

But Jesus replied, “Why are you so afraid? You don't have much faith.” Then he got up and ordered the wind and the waves to calm down. And everything was calm.

I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.

They encouraged the followers and begged them to remain faithful. They told them, “We have to suffer a lot before we can get into God's kingdom.”

He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share that same comfort with others in trouble.

Anyone who belongs to Christ Jesus and wants to live right will have trouble from others.
