Jacob said, “Now tell me your name.” “Don't you know who I am?” he asked. And he blessed Jacob.

After Jacob came back to the land of Canaan, God appeared to him again. This time he gave Jacob a new name and blessed him by saying: I am God All-Powerful, and from now on your name will be Israel instead of Jacob. You will have many children. Your descendants will become nations, and some of the men in your family will even be kings.

Then he used twelve stones to build an altar in honour of the LORD. Each stone stood for one of the tribes of Israel, which was the name the LORD had given to their ancestor Jacob. Elijah dug a ditch around the altar, large enough to hold almost fourteen litres.

Everyone followed their old customs. None of them worshipped only the LORD, and they refused to obey the laws and commands that the LORD had given to the descendants of Jacob, the man he named Israel.

Abraham's son Isaac was the father of Esau and Jacob.

Can you understand the mysteries surrounding God All-Powerful?

Has anyone gone up to heaven and come back down? Has anyone grabbed hold of the wind? Has anyone wrapped up the sea or marked out boundaries for the earth? If you know of any who have done such things, then tell me their names and their children's names.

A child has been born for us. We have been given a son who will be our ruler. His names will be Wonderful Adviser and Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace.

Let's return to the LORD. He has torn us to shreds, but he will bandage our wounds and make us well.

Moses sent messengers from Israel's camp near Kadesh with this message for the king of Edom: We are Israelites, your own relatives, and we're sure you have heard the terrible things that have happened to us.

The angel answered, “I am Gabriel, God's servant, and I was sent to tell you this good news.

The LORD our God hasn't explained the present or the future, but he has commanded us to obey the laws he gave to us and our descendants.
