Esau hated his brother Jacob because he had stolen the blessing that was supposed to be his. So he said to himself, “Just as soon as my father dies, I'll kill Jacob.”

When Rebekah found out what Esau planned to do, she sent for Jacob and told him, “Son, your brother Esau is just waiting for the time when he can kill you.

Jacob sent messengers on ahead to Esau, who lived in the land of Seir, also known as Edom.

Jacob was so frightened that he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two groups.

But Esau ran towards Jacob and hugged and kissed him. Then the two brothers started crying.

David went into the tent he had set up for the sacred chest. Then he sat there and prayed: LORD All-Powerful, my family and I don't deserve what you have already done for us,

Protect me from abuse, so I can obey your laws.

Help! They are chasing me, and they are too strong.

Protect me, LORD God! I run to you for safety,

I come to you for shelter. Protect me, keep me safe, and don't disappoint me.

Listen to my prayer and hurry to save me. Be my mighty rock and the fortress where I am safe.

Show that I am right, God! Defend me against everyone who doesn't know you; rescue me from each of those deceitful liars.

Making up with a friend you have offended is harder than breaking through a city wall.

The God we worship can save us from you and your flaming furnace.

So war will break out, and your fortresses will be destroyed. Your enemies will do to you what Shalman did to the people of Beth-Arbel— mothers and their children will be beaten to death against rocks.

Keep us from being tempted and protect us from evil.

As you walk along the road, you might see a bird's nest in a tree or on the ground. If the mother bird is in the nest with either her eggs or her baby birds, you are allowed to take the baby birds or the eggs, but not the mother bird. Let her go free, and the LORD will bless you with a long and successful life.

Again your ancestors cried out to the LORD for help. They said, “We have sinned! We stopped worshipping you, our LORD, and started worshipping Baal and Astarte. But now, if you rescue us from our enemies, we will worship you.”

I pray that the LORD will help me escape and show that I am in the right.
