Leah gave birth to a son and named him Reuben, because she said, “The LORD has taken away my sorrow. Now my husband will love me more than he does Rachel.”

The LORD knew that Jacob loved Rachel more than he did Leah, and so he gave children to Leah, but not to Rachel.

If the fearsome God worshipped by Abraham and my father Isaac had not been on my side, you would have sent me away without a thing. But God saw my hard work, and he knew the trouble I was in, so he helped me. Then last night he told you how wrong you were.

During their time there, Jacob's eldest son Reuben slept with Bilhah, who was one of Jacob's other wives. And Jacob found out about it.

When they stopped for the night, one of them opened his sack to get some grain for his donkey, and straight away he saw his money bag.

But if the LORD hears these curses and sees the trouble I'm in, perhaps he will have pity on me instead.

Reuben was the eldest son of Jacob, but he lost his rights as the firstborn son because he slept with one of his father's wives. The honour of the firstborn son was then given to Joseph,

You answered their prayers when they were in trouble.

The LORD said: I have seen how my people are suffering as slaves in Egypt, and I have heard them beg for my help because of the way they are being ill-treated. I feel sorry for them,

and everyone believed. They bowed down and worshipped the LORD because they knew that he had seen their suffering and was going to help them.

“What the Lord has done for me will keep people from looking down on me.”

We called out for help to you, the LORD God of our ancestors. You heard our cries; you knew we were in trouble and abused.

“LORD All-Powerful, I am your servant, but I am so miserable! Please let me have a son. I will give him to you for as long as he lives, and his hair will never be cut.”
