Abraham answered: I did it because I didn't think any of you respected God, and I was sure that someone would kill me to get my wife.

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in the bushes. So he took the ram and sacrificed it in place of his son.

You were willing to offer the LORD your only son, and so he makes you this solemn promise,

The LORD is pleased only with those who worship him and trust his love.

Serve and honour the LORD; be glad and tremble.

You will show the right path to all who worship you.

Our LORD, you are the friend of your worshippers, and you make an agreement with all of us.

“Don't be afraid!” Moses replied. “God has come only to test you, so that by obeying him you won't sin.”

Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of knowledge. Only a fool rejects wisdom and good advice.

Everything you were taught can be put into a few words: Respect and obey God! This is what life is all about.

But for you who honour my name, victory will shine like the sun with healing in its rays, and you will jump around like calves at play.

Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me.

All who have given up home or brothers and sisters or father and mother or children or land for me will be given a hundred times as much. They will also have eternal life.

Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.

God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.

The church in Judea, Galilee, and Samaria now had a time of peace and kept on worshipping the Lord. The church became stronger, as the Holy Spirit encouraged it and helped it grow.

But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.

God did not keep back his own Son, but he gave him for us. If God did this, won't he freely give us everything else?

You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.

It doesn't matter how much you have. What matters is how much you are willing to give from what you have.

because he was sure that God could raise people to life. This was just like getting Isaac back from death.

We should be grateful that we were given a kingdom that cannot be shaken. And in this kingdom we please God by worshipping him and by showing him great honour and respect.

Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.” I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”

From the throne a voice said, “If you worship and fear our God, give praise to him, no matter who you are.”

“Tell me,” Samuel said. “Does the LORD really want sacrifices and offerings? No! He doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey him.
