Ezra 1:2

Contemporary English Version (Anglicised) 2012

I am King Cyrus of Persia. The LORD God of heaven, who is also the God of Israel, has made me the ruler of all nations on earth. And he has chosen me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. The LORD God will watch over and encourage any of his people who want to go back to Jerusalem and help build the temple.

There's not enough room in all of heaven for you, LORD God. How could you possibly live on earth in this temple I have built?

Praise the LORD God of Israel who made heaven and earth! He has given David a son who is not only wise and clever, but who has the knowledge to build a temple for the LORD and a palace for himself.

Many people felt that the LORD God wanted them to help rebuild his temple, and they made plans to go to Jerusalem. Among them were priests, Levites, and leaders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

King Cyrus of Persia had said the Israelites could have cedar trees brought from Lebanon to Joppa by sea. So they sent grain, wine, and olive oil to the cities of Tyre and Sidon as payment for these trees, and they gave money to the stoneworkers and carpenters.

But Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the family leaders answered, “You cannot take part in building a temple for the LORD our God! We will build it ourselves, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.”

I want them to be able to offer pleasing sacrifices to God and to pray for me and my family.

Praise God in heaven! God's love never fails.

Who appointed this ruler from the east? Who puts nations and kings in his power? His sword and his arrows turn them to dust blown by the wind.

I will make the message of my prophets come true. They are saying, “Jerusalem will be filled with people, and the LORD will rebuild the towns of Judah.”

I am also the one who says, “Cyrus will lead my people and obey my orders. Jerusalem and the temple will be rebuilt.”

The LORD said to Cyrus, his chosen one: I have taken hold of your right hand to help you capture nations and remove kings from power. City gates will open for you; not one will stay closed.

The LORD said: Heaven is my throne; the earth is my footstool. What kind of house could you build for me? In what place will I rest?

You told me to say that idols did not create the heavens and the earth, and that you, the LORD, will destroy every idol.

After Babylonia has been the strongest nation for seventy years, I will be kind and bring you back to Jerusalem, just as I have promised.

Daniel served there until the first year of King Cyrus.

You control human events— you give rulers their power and take it away, and you are the source of wisdom and knowledge.

But the God who rules from heaven can explain mysteries. And while you were sleeping, he showed you what will happen in the future.

Jonah answered, “I'm a Hebrew, and I worship the LORD God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
