Jeroboam asked for advice and then made two gold statues of calves. He showed them to the people and said, “Listen everyone! You won't have to go to Jerusalem to worship any more. Here are your gods who rescued you from Egypt.”

He also decided to start a new festival for the Israelites on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, just like the one in Judah. On that day, Jeroboam went to Bethel and offered sacrifices on the altar to the gold calf he had put there. Then he assigned the priests their duties.

He said, “Announce a day of worship for Baal!” After the day had been announced,

But he did not stop the worship of the gold statues of calves at Dan and Bethel that Jeroboam had made for the people to worship.

Jeroboam chose his own priests to serve at the local shrines in Israel and at the places of worship where he had set up statues of goat-demons and of calves.

Now you and your powerful army think you can stand up to the kingdom that the LORD has given to David's descendants. The only gods you have are those gold statues of calves that Jeroboam made for you.

So you must never make idols of silver or gold to worship in place of me.

Do not make idols that look like anything in the sky or on earth or in the sea under the earth.

Put two onyx stones in gold settings, then attach one to each of the shoulder straps. On one of these stones engrave the names of Israel's first six sons in the order of their birth. And do the same with his remaining six sons on the other stone. In this way Aaron will always carry the names of the tribes of Israel when he enters the holy place, and I will never forget my people.

After the people saw that Moses had been on the mountain for a long time, they went to Aaron and said, “Make us an image of a god who will lead and protect us. Moses brought us out of Egypt, but nobody knows what has happened to him.”

Then I asked them to bring me their gold earrings. They took them off and gave them to me. I threw the gold into a fire, and out came this bull.

Everybody took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron,

So the LORD punished the people of Israel with a terrible disease for talking Aaron into making the gold idol.

When Aaron saw what was happening, he built an altar in front of the idol and said, “Tomorrow we will celebrate in honour of the LORD.”

The LORD said to Moses: Hurry back down! Those people you led out of Egypt are acting like fools.

They have already stopped obeying me and have made themselves an idol in the shape of a young bull. They have bowed down to it, offered sacrifices, and said that it is the god who brought them out of Egypt.

Then you will treat your idols of silver and gold like rubbish; you will throw them away like filthy rags.

Some people hire a goldsmith and give silver and gold to be formed into an idol for them to worship.

Once she started doing these things in Egypt, she never stopped. Men slept with her, and she was always ready for sex.

All who live in Samaria tremble with concern for the idols at sinful Bethel. The idol there was the pride of the priests, but it has been put to shame; now everyone will cry.

Now you continue to sin by designing and making idols of silver in the shape of calves. You are told to sacrifice to these idols— yes, even to kiss them.

Since we are God's children, we must not think that he is like an idol made out of gold or silver or stone. He isn't like anything that humans have thought up and made.

Then they made an idol in the shape of a calf. They offered sacrifices to the idol and were pleased with what they had done.

They worshipped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols.

I saw how quickly you had sinned and disobeyed the LORD your God. There you were, worshipping the metal idol you had made in the shape of a calf.

But I will ask you to do one thing: give me all the earrings you took from the enemy.” The enemy soldiers had been Ishmaelites, and they wore gold earrings.

Gideon returned to his home in Ophrah and had the gold made into a statue, which the Israelites soon started worshipping. They became unfaithful to God, and even Gideon and his family were trapped into worshipping the statue. The Midianites had been defeated so badly that they were no longer strong enough to attack Israel. And so Israel was at peace for the remaining forty years of Gideon's life.
