God may give you everything you want—money, property, and wealth. Then God doesn't let you enjoy it, and someone you don't even know gets it all. That's senseless and terribly unfair!

I'll also give you what you didn't ask for. You'll be rich and respected as long as you live, and you'll be greater than any other king.

The LORD made Solomon a great king, and the whole nation was amazed at how famous he was. In fact, no other king of Israel was as great as Solomon.

David was rich and respected and lived to be an old man. Then he died, and his son Solomon became king.

God replied: Solomon, you could have asked me to make you rich or famous or to let you live a long time. Or you could have asked for your enemies to be destroyed. Instead, you asked for wisdom and knowledge to rule my people.

Use your powerful arm and rescue me from the hands of mere humans whose world won't last. You provide food for those you love. Their children have plenty, and their grandchildren will have more than enough.

Their eyes bulge with fat, and their minds are flooded with foolish thoughts.

Then I realized that we work and do wonderful things just because we are jealous of others. This makes no more sense than chasing the wind.

For example, some people don't have friends or family. But they are never satisfied with what they own, and they never stop working to get more. They should ask themselves, “Why am I always working to have more? Who will get what I leave behind?” What a senseless and miserable life!

I have seen something terribly unfair. People get rich, but it does them no good.

That's terribly unfair. They leave the world just as they came into it. They gained nothing from running after the wind.

What is the best thing to do in the short life that God has given us? I think we should enjoy eating, drinking, and working hard. This is what God intends us to do.

Suppose you are very rich and able to enjoy everything you own. Then go ahead and enjoy working hard—this is God's gift to you.

Why waste your money on what isn't really food? Why work hard for something that doesn't satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and you will enjoy the very best foods.

Foreigners and strangers have taken our land and our homes.

Sir, the Most High God made your father a great and powerful man and brought him much honour and glory.

They don't seem to realize how weak and feeble they are; their hair has turned grey, while foreigners rule.

You will work hard on your farms, but everything you harvest will be eaten by foreigners, who will ill-treat you and abuse you for the rest of your life.

Foreigners in your towns will become wealthy and powerful, while you become poor and powerless.
