Deuteronomy 17:2

The LORD your God is giving you towns to live in. But later, a man or a woman in your town may start worshipping other gods, or even the sun, moon, or stars. I have warned you not to worship other gods, because whoever worships them is disobeying the LORD and breaking the agreement he made with you.

All of that happened because the people of Israel had not obeyed the LORD their God. They rejected the solemn agreement he had made with them, and they ignored everything that the LORD's servant Moses had told them.

He rebuilt the local shrines that his father Hezekiah had torn down. He built altars for the god Baal and set up a sacred pole for worshipping the goddess Asherah, just as King Ahab of Israel had done. And he faithfully worshipped the stars in heaven.

Such horrible sins would have deserved punishment from God.

Death is the punishment for having sex with an animal.

Death is the punishment for offering sacrifices to any god except me.

It will be different from the agreement I made with their ancestors when I led them out of Egypt. Although I was their God, they broke that agreement.

You asked me to be a witness when you made the agreement to set your slaves free. And as part of the ceremony you cut a calf into two parts, then walked between the parts. But you people of Jerusalem have broken that agreement as well as my agreement with Israel. So I will do to you what you did to that calf.

I will find you guilty of being an unfaithful wife and a murderer, and in my fierce anger I will sentence you to death!

Sound a warning! Israel, you broke our agreement and ignored my teaching. Now an eagle is swooping down to attack my land.

to say to the community of Israel: Death by stoning is the penalty for any citizens or foreigners in the country who sacrifice their children to the god Molech.

War will break out because you broke our agreement, and if you escape to your walled cities, I'll punish you with horrible diseases, and you will be captured by your enemies.

But you will need two or three witnesses—one witness isn't enough to prove a person guilty. Get rid of those who are guilty of such evil. Take them outside your town gates and let everyone stone them to death. But the witnesses must be the first to throw stones.

So make sure that everyone in your tribe remains faithful to the LORD and never starts worshipping gods of other nations. If even one of you worships idols, you will be like the root of a plant that produces bitter, poisonous fruit.

And they will be given this answer: Our ancestors worshipped the LORD, but after he brought them out of Egypt and made an agreement with them, they rejected the agreement

I am bringing them into the land that I promised their ancestors. It is a land rich with milk and honey, and the Israelites will have more than enough food to eat. But they will get fat and turn their backs on me and start worshipping other gods. The Israelites will reject me and break the agreement that I made with them.

Always remember the agreement that the LORD your God made with you, and don't make an idol in any shape or form.

If two or more witnesses accused someone of breaking the Law of Moses, that person could be put to death.

I said everything in Jericho belonged to me and had to be destroyed. But the Israelites have kept some of the things for themselves. They stole from me and hid what they took. Then they lied about it.

and the LORD will show who stole what should have been destroyed. That man must be put to death, his body burnt, and his possessions thrown into the fire. He has done a terrible thing by breaking the sacred agreement that the LORD made with Israel.”

The LORD was angry with Israel and said: The Israelites have broken the agreement I made with their ancestors. They won't obey me,

The crowd pushed closer and closer, but Joash replied, “Are you trying to take revenge for Baal? Are you trying to rescue Baal? If you are, you will be the ones who are put to death, and it will happen before another day dawns. If Baal really is a god, let him take his own revenge on someone who tears down his altar.”
