After the LORD your God gives land to each of you, there may be poor Israelites in the town where you live. If there are, then don't be mean and selfish with your money.

This is why the Jews in the villages now celebrate on the fourteenth day of the month. It is a joyful holiday that they celebrate by feasting and sending gifts of food to each other.

the days when we Jews defeated our enemies. Remember this month as a time when our sorrow was turned to joy, and celebration took the place of crying. Celebrate by having parties and by giving to the poor and by sharing gifts of food with each other.

Don't charge interest when you lend money to any of my people who are in need.

Caring for the poor is lending to the LORD, and you will be well repaid.

If you won't help the poor, don't expect to be heard when you cry out for help.

Give your food to the hungry and care for the homeless. Then your light will shine in the dark; your darkest hour will be like the noonday sun.

If any of your people become poor and unable to support themselves, you must help them, just as you are supposed to help foreigners who live among you.

But the first official refused to have pity. Instead, he went and had the other official put in jail until he could pay what he owed.

When people ask you for something, give it to them. When they want to borrow money, lend it to them.

There will always be some Israelites who are poor and needy. That's why I am commanding you to be generous with them.

Be careful! Don't say to yourself, “Soon it will be the seventh year, and then I won't be able to get my money back.” It would be horrible for you to think that way and to be so selfish that you refuse to help the poor. They are your relatives, and if you don't help them, they may ask the LORD to decide whether you have done wrong. And he will say that you are guilty.

If you hire poor people to work for you, don't hold back their pay, whether they are Israelites or foreigners who live in your town.
