You may hear that some worthless people have talked everyone there into worshipping other gods, even though these gods had never done anything for them.

These people came from our own group, yet they were not part of us. If they had been part of us, they would have stayed with us. But they left, which proves that they did not belong to our group.

And now these people are already making you turn against each other. They think only about this life, and they don't have God's Spirit.

Someone else may say to you, “Let's worship other gods.” That person may be your best friend, your brother or sister, your son or daughter, or your own dear wife or husband. But you must not listen to people who say such things. Instead, you must stone them to death. You must be the first to throw the stones, then others from the community will finish the job. Don't show any pity. The gods worshipped by other nations have never done anything for you or your ancestors. People who ask you to worship other gods are trying to get you to stop worshipping the LORD, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. So put to death anyone who asks you to worship another god.

You can tell God's children from the devil's children, because those who belong to the devil refuse to do right or to love each other.

Then straight after Rehoboam became king, you and your bunch of worthless followers challenged Rehoboam, who was too young to know how to stop you.

Earlier, when the LORD took the northern tribes away from David's family, the people living in northern Israel chose Jeroboam son of Nebat as their king. Jeroboam caused the Israelites to sin and to stop worshipping the LORD.

But evil people are pulled up like thorn bushes. They are not dug up by hand,

Don't pay any attention to that good-for-nothing Nabal. His name means “fool”, and it really fits him! I didn't see the men you sent,

But some worthless fools said, “How can someone like Saul rescue us from our enemies?” They did not want Saul to be their king, and so they didn't bring him any gifts. But Saul kept calm.

And when you see the sun or moon or stars, don't be tempted to bow down and worship them. The LORD put them there for all the other nations to worship.

After the LORD your God gives you towns to live in, you may hear a rumour about one of the towns.

You must carefully find out if the rumour is true. Then if the people of that town have actually done such a disgusting thing in your own country,

So when you hear that someone in your town is committing this disgusting sin, you must carefully find out if that person really is guilty.
