Three days later, while the king was celebrating his birthday with a dinner for his officials, he sent for his personal servant and the chief cook.

During the third year of his rule, Xerxes gave a big dinner for all his officials and officers. The governors and leaders of the provinces were also invited, and even the commanders of the Persian and Median armies came.

When all this happened, the LORD All-Powerful told you to weep and mourn, to shave your heads, and wear sackcloth.

The LORD All-Powerful has spoken to me this solemn promise: “I won't forgive them for this, not as long as they live.”

I have declared war on you, your officials, and advisers.

And since they are hungry, I will give them a banquet. They will celebrate, get drunk, then fall asleep, never to wake up!

I, the LORD All-Powerful, the true King, promise that the officials and advisers, the governors and leaders and the soldiers of Babylon will get drunk, fall asleep, and never wake up.

That same night, the king was killed.

They are like drunkards overcome by wine, or like dry thorn bushes burning in a fire.
