Why did you sneak away without telling me? I would have given you a going-away party with singing and with music on tambourines and harps.

David then told the leaders to choose some Levites to sing and play music on small harps, other stringed instruments, and cymbals.

four thousand will be guards at the temple, and four thousand will praise the LORD by playing the musical instruments I have given them.”

The Levites were ready to play the instruments that had belonged to David; the priests were ready to blow the trumpets.

Foreign rulers brought me silver, gold, and precious treasures. Men and women sang for me, and I had many wives who gave me great pleasure.

At your drinking parties you have the music of stringed instruments, tambourines, and flutes. But you never even think about all the LORD has done,

You will have no reason to sing or play music on harps,

No more of your noisy songs! I won't listen when you play your harps.

Instead of singing in the temple, they will cry and weep. Dead bodies will be everywhere. So keep silent! I, the LORD, have spoken!”

You have already lived long enough like people who don't know God. You were immoral and followed your evil desires. You went around drinking and feasting and carrying on. In fact, you even worshipped disgusting idols.

The music of harps and singers and of flutes and trumpets will no longer be heard. No workers will ever set up shop in that city, and the sound of grinding grain will be silenced for ever.
