you abuse the poor and demand heavy taxes from them. You have built expensive homes, but you won't enjoy them; you have planted vineyards, but you will get no wine.

or joyful and happy times, while bringing in the crops. Singing and shouting are gone from the vineyards. There are no joyful shouts where grapes were pressed. God has silenced them all.

The troops will steal your valuable possessions; they will break down your walls, and crush your expensive houses. Then the stones and wood and all the remains will be dumped into the sea.

You strong ones have used your powerful horns to chase off those that are weak,

But you will run short of grain and wine,

I will punish you terribly, and you will be ruined. You will be struck with incurable diseases and with fever that leads to blindness and depression. Your enemies will eat the crops you plant,

The LORD said: I will punish Israel for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. They sell honest people for money, and the needy are sold for the price of sandals.

They throw the poor to the ground and push aside those who are helpless. My holy name is dishonoured, because fathers and sons sleep with the same young women.

I will tear down winter homes and summer homes. Houses decorated with ivory and all other mansions will be gone for ever. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Here is a message for the leaders of Philistia and Egypt— tell everyone to come together on the hills of Samaria. Let them see the injustice and the lawlessness in that city.

You women of Samaria are fat cows! You ill-treat and abuse the poor and needy, then you say to your husbands, “Bring us more drinks!”

At the LORD's command, houses great and small will be smashed to pieces.

Horses can't gallop on rocks; oceans can't be ploughed. But you have turned justice and fairness into bitter poison.

You people crush those in need and wipe out the poor.

I'll make Israel prosper again. You will rebuild your towns and live in them. You will drink wine from your own vineyards and eat the fruit you grow.

So the LORD will leave Samaria in ruins— merely an empty field where vineyards are planted. He will scatter its stones and destroy its foundations.

You grab any field or house that you want; you cheat families out of homes and land.

You won't harvest what you plant or use the oil from your olive trees or drink the wine from grapes you grow.

Their possessions will be taken, their homes left in ruins. They won't get to live in the houses they build, or drink wine from the grapes in their own vineyards.

You harvest less than you plant, you never have enough to eat or drink, your clothes don't keep you warm, and your wages are stored in bags full of holes.

Esau's descendants may say, “Although our nation Edom is in ruins, we will rebuild.” But I, the LORD All-Powerful, promise to tear down whatever they build. Then everyone will know that I will never stop being angry with them as long as they are so sinful.

A man will be engaged to a woman, but before they can get married, she will be raped by enemy soldiers. Some of you will build houses, but never get to live in them. If you plant a vineyard, you won't be around long enough to enjoy the first harvest.

You ill-treat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court?
