I chose some of you to be prophets and others to be Nazirites. People of Israel, you know this is true. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Elijah was a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead. One day he went to King Ahab and said, “I'm a servant of the living LORD, the God of Israel. And I swear in his name that it won't rain until I say so. There won't even be any dew on the ground.”

Then appoint Jehu son of Nimshi to be king of Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat to take your place as my prophet.

At that very moment, a prophet ran up to Ahab and said, “You can see that Benhadad's army is very strong. But the LORD has promised to help you defeat them today. Then you will know that the LORD is in control.”

About this time the LORD commanded a prophet to say to a friend, “Hit me!” But the friend refused,

The man quickly tore the bandage off his face, and Ahab saw that he was one of the prophets.

“We could ask Micaiah son of Imlah,” Ahab said. “But I hate Micaiah. He always has bad news for me.” “Don't say that!” Jehoshaphat replied.

So the LORD made sure that every prophet warned Israel and Judah with these words: “I, the LORD, command you to stop doing sinful things and start obeying my laws and teachings! I gave them to your ancestors, and I told my servants the prophets to repeat them to you.”

One day the prophets said to Elisha, “The place where we meet with you is too small.

But the LORD God felt sorry for his people, and instead of destroying the temple, he sent prophets who warned the people over and over again about their sins.

Then the LORD said: Jeremiah, some men from Anathoth say they will kill you, if you keep on speaking for me.

Now listen to what I say! Did I abandon you in the desert or surround you with darkness? You are my people, yet you have told me, “We'll do what we want, and we refuse to worship you!”

and I, the LORD, will speak. I was never unfair to your ancestors, but they left me and became worthless by following worthless idols.

While they listened, the priests and the prophets said to the crowd, “All of you have heard Jeremiah prophesy that Jerusalem will be destroyed. He deserves the death penalty.”

Ever since your ancestors left Egypt, I have been sending my servants the prophets to speak for me.

The leaders of Jerusalem were purer than snow and whiter than milk; their bodies were healthy and glowed like jewels.

“Enough of your preaching!” That's what you tell me. “We won't be disgraced, so stop preaching!”

So they called the two apostles back in and told them that they must never, for any reason, teach anything about the name of Jesus.

“We told you plainly not to teach in the name of Jesus. But look what you have done! You have been teaching all over Jerusalem, and you are trying to blame us for his death.”

You stubborn and hard-headed people! You are always fighting against the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did.

So when I want to speak to them, I will choose one of them to be a prophet like you. I will give my message to that prophet, who will tell the people exactly what I have said.

Saul sent a few soldiers to bring David back. They went to Ramah and found Samuel in charge of a group of prophets who were all prophesying. Then the Spirit of God took control of the soldiers and they started prophesying too.

From the town of Dan in the north to the town of Beersheba in the south, everyone in the country knew that Samuel was truly the LORD's prophet.
