Hezekiah defeated the Philistine towns as far away as Gaza—from the smallest towns to the large, walled cities.

While Uzziah was king, he started a war against the Philistines. He smashed the walls of the cities of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod, then rebuilt towns around Ashdod and in other parts of Philistia.

Before the king of Egypt attacked the town of Gaza, the LORD told me to say to the Philistines:

The Anakim who survive in Gaza and Ashkelon will mourn for you by shaving their heads and sitting in silence. You ask how long will I continue to attack you with my sword, then you tell me to put it away and leave you alone.

I will set fire to your land, and anyone who defended your nation will die. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

I will set fire to the land of Magog and to those nations along the coast that think they are so secure, and they will know that I am the LORD.

Now I will burn down the palaces and fortresses of King Hazael and of King Benhadad.

The LORD said: I will punish Philistia for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. They dragged off my people from town after town to sell them as slaves to the Edomites.

I will destroy the king of Ashdod and the ruler of Ashkelon. I will strike down Ekron, and that will be the end of the Philistines. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Gaza and Ashkelon will be deserted and left in ruins. Ashdod will be emptied in broad daylight, and Ekron uprooted.

Dear friends, don't try to get even. Let God take revenge. In the Scriptures the Lord says, “I am the one to take revenge and pay them back.”

Soon our enemies will get what they deserve— suddenly they will slip, and total disaster will quickly follow.
