One day, David thought, “I wonder if any of Saul's family are still alive. If they are, I will be kind to them, because I made a promise to Jonathan.”

Jonathan, I miss you most! I loved you like a brother. You were truly loyal to me, more faithful than a wife to her husband.

David had made a promise to Jonathan with the LORD as his witness, so he spared Jonathan's son Mephibosheth, the grandson of Saul.

David said, “Don't be afraid. I'll be kind to you because Jonathan was your father. I'm going to give you back the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul. Besides that, you will always eat with me at my table.”

The sons of Barzillai from Gilead helped me when I was running from your brother Absalom. Be kind to them and let them eat at your table.

Don't desert an old friend of your family or visit your relatives when you are in trouble. A friend nearby is better than relatives far away.

And anyone who gives one of my most humble followers a cup of cool water, just because that person is my follower, will be rewarded.

The king will answer, “Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.”

And anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name, just because you belong to me, will surely be rewarded.

Finally, all of you should agree and have concern and love for each other. You should also be kind and humble.

Jonathan said, “Take care of yourself. And remember, we have each asked the LORD to watch and make sure that we and our descendants keep our promise for ever.” David left and Jonathan went back to town.
