David saw the angel killing everyone and told the LORD, “These people are like sheep with me as their shepherd. I have sinned terribly, but they have done nothing wrong. Please, punish me and my family instead of them!”

You let us be slaughtered like sheep, and you scattered us among the nations.

Our God, why have you completely rejected us? Why are you so angry with the ones you care for?

At once the king sent for Moses and Aaron. He told them, “I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you.

Jonah told them, “Throw me into the sea, and it will calm down. I'm the cause of this terrible storm.”

The LORD All-Powerful said: My sword, wake up! Attack my shepherd and friend. Strike down the shepherd! Scatter the little sheep, and I will destroy them.

But the two men bowed down and prayed, “Our God, you gave these people life. Why would you punish everyone here when only one man has sinned?”
