Gehazi said to himself, “Elisha let that Syrian off too easily. He should have taken Naaman's gift. I swear by the living LORD that I will talk to Naaman myself and get something from him.”

Elijah was a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead. One day he went to King Ahab and said, “I'm a servant of the living LORD, the God of Israel. And I swear in his name that it won't rain until I say so. There won't even be any dew on the ground.”

Elisha became angry with the king and exclaimed, “If you had struck it five or six times, you would completely wipe out the Syrians. Now you will defeat them only three times.”

He said to his servant Gehazi, “This woman has been very helpful. Ask her to come up here to the roof for a moment.” She came, and Elisha told Gehazi to say to her, “You've gone to a lot of trouble for us, and we want to help you. Is there something we can request the king or army commander to do?” The woman answered, “With my relatives nearby, I have everything I need.”

She left at once for Mount Carmel to talk with Elisha. When Elisha saw her coming, he said, “Gehazi, look! It's the woman from Shunem.

Gehazi ran on ahead and laid Elisha's walking stick on the boy's face, but the boy didn't move or make a sound. Gehazi ran back to Elisha and said, “The boy didn't wake up.”

Elisha called out to Gehazi, “Ask the boy's mother to come here.” Gehazi did, and when she was at the door, Elisha said, “You can take your son.”

“I am a servant of the living LORD,” Elisha answered, “and I swear that I will not take anything from you.” Naaman kept begging, but Elisha kept refusing.

So he hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw Gehazi running after him, he got out of his chariot to meet him. Naaman asked, “Is everything all right?”

He said, “I pray that God will punish me terribly, if Elisha's head is still on his shoulders by this time tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, the king was asking Gehazi the servant of Elisha about the amazing things Elisha had been doing.

Some time later Elisha went to the capital city of Damascus to visit King Benhadad of Syria, who was sick. And when Benhadad was told he was there,

The wicked boast about their deepest desires. Those greedy people hate and curse you, LORD.

Do not want to take anything that belongs to someone else. Don't want to take anyone's house, wife or husband, slaves, oxen, donkeys or anything else.

Do not misuse my name. I am the LORD your God, and I will punish anyone who misuses my name.

A lazy person says, “I am cleverer than everyone else.”

People of Israel, you come from Jacob's family and the tribe of Judah. You claim to worship me, the LORD God of Israel, but you are lying.

But all you think about is how to cheat or abuse or murder some innocent victim.

You're doomed! You made your family rich at the expense of others. You even said to yourself, “I'm above the law.”

The others were Simon, known as the Eager One, and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus.

We could have sold this perfume for a lot of money and given it to the poor.”

Then he said to the crowd, “Don't be greedy! Owning a lot of things won't make your life safe.”

The master praised his dishonest manager for looking out for himself so well. That's how it is! The people of this world look out for themselves better than the people who belong to the light.

Even before the evening meal started, the devil had made Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, decide to betray Jesus.

Jesus told his disciples, “I chose all twelve of you, but one of you is a demon!”

But they agreed to cheat and keep some of the money for themselves. So when Ananias took the rest of the money to the apostles,

Demas loves the things of this world so much that he left me and went to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia.

Church officials are in charge of God's work, and so they must also have a good reputation. They must not be bossy, quick-tempered, heavy drinkers, bullies, or dishonest in business.

Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money.

I swear by the living LORD that whoever sinned must die, even if it turns out to be my own son Jonathan.” No one said a word.
